Evaluation Question 1

In what ways does your music magazine use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of existing music magazines?

Within all magazines you expect to see all typical music magazine conventions and that is no different in my magazine. In order to keep within my ‘genre’ and target audience I have chosen key conventions in which all magazines should include and expanded more on the points as to whether I have challenged them or not.

The title of my magazine I believe could have been greatly improved as since my main competitors were of an indie/rock genre they had a more creative name: i.e. Q! and Kerrang whereas although the title of my magazine ‘indierocks’ was different, I think it was too common and unoriginal as appose to other existing music magazines on the market. Especially since my title was chosen purely because it included that sort of genre music. Yet, if I explain this contextually I believe the title of my magazine informs you what will be included in my magazine unlike Q! and Kerrang where there articles are similar to mine but the title is broader suggesting that there may be some confusion between readers. As you can see I have placed my masthead at the top of the page and behind my model and kept it capitalised and bolded. I believe this has a huge impact on my readers as it attracts their attention more. The colour of my masthead also plays a vital part as to why I’ve chosen red as with the many connotations regarding red, I believe it symbolises power and passion something which my magazine includes.

One thing which will always be the biggest selling point for a magazine is the main image, and
that is no exception in my magazine. By studying other music magazines and looking at competitors one thing that really stood out was sex. This is having sex as a symbol which is represented on a musician or in their gestures. This is exactly what I did for my main image on my magazine; I had my model topless with only a jacket covering her naked chest. By dressing my model in all black I believe it helped me to show a sexier, seductive side which hopefully increases sales in my magazine. I believe by challenging my competitors instead of an extreme close up like most magazines and using a long shot we see the model’s figure, facial expression and body language something which will appeal to many people.  The impact of the model’s hand gesture shows us her ‘naughtiness’ and suggests that my magazine will be something different than those on the market already.

My contents page also plays a huge part by challenging competitors. It uses many conventions like similar magazines, yet I believe it challenges existing magazines by the complexity of my layout. Although it has a 'flow' you very rarely see a layout like my own. Once again I have used red as a main colour scheme due to the many connotations of the colour. I believe my edited images play a vital part to my magazine, as since I have greyscaled images number 36, 32 and 60 we are focused more onto the main 'article' of my magazine - Holly and once again her sexiness. However one thing I believe could be improved would be the 'contents' I believe it's a bit too boring and I could have inserted the name of my magazine, like most magazines do.

My double page spread is something that definitely develops on conventions within a typical magazine. I once again have used the same colour scheme: red and black yet slightly changed the background colour in order to match the drop down in the photography studie. Especially to keep it looking sleek and eye catching I have my main image on one page and the article on the adjacent side. I believe the impact of my quoted heading is a great use of challenging other magazines as it's something different, and something I have hardly seen in other magazines. One thing readers will notice is the bottom of my magazine on the contents page and double page spread, I have used a red 'line' with the date and page number included on, this is so readers can navigate a lot easier and I believe the 'line' gives my magazine more of a flow and adds a finishing touch. Something which I also haven't seen very often in magazines.

Evaluation Question 7

What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from creating your preliminary task to your music magazine?

On the left hand side the images are my preliminary task images, the right my actual magazine. I discuss these images further down in this post.

Through the progression of my work from the preliminary task, the college magazine, to the final task of creating my music magazine I believe I have learnt a lot to where I currently am. My knowledge on magazines as a whole has greatly improved, I am aware of the key conventions from the basis of a Masthead to the reason behind ‘drop shadows’ on coverlines and the institutions behind them. From before this task I was useless regarding Adobe Photoshop and thoroughly relied on Paint/Microsoft Publisher yet as the weeks went on I grew more and more confident with other software’s – especially Adobe Photoshop which has been proven throughout my blog, via posts, weekly updates and the final production of my professional looking music magazine.

As we can clearly see, looking at both pieces of work, the preliminary and the final product, it is obviously apparent the software I have used, and my knowledge of Photoshop has significantly impacted on the final outcome of my magazine. For my preliminary task I used Microsoft Publisher, which resulted in restricted editing options and leaving you with the only obvious, thus being: change of font size; style of font and other basic editing. This had a huge impact on the quality of my preliminary task by only producing a poor quality, messy college magazine. This lack of edit-ability was purely reflected on my preliminary task and shown through the lack of profession of the actual front cover and contents page.  However, by using Photoshop on my final magazine we can see the significant effect it has on the quality of the magazine, this being purely because of the wider range of tools I can use within the software. By being able to use a ‘drop shadow’ and ‘magic wand tool’ on Photoshop I was able to cut around my images perfectly and able to emphasise coverlines on my front cover in order to stand out to the audience and give the text a three-dimensional view ‘standing-out’ more to the readers. With the help of all these extra features Photoshop enabled me to create a high-professional music magazine perfect for my target audience. The magic wand tool was a vital feature for me to use whilst producing my magazine, especially with how many images needed separated from their background, which has helped me to produce as high of a quality magazine that I have.
Additionally, regarding the use of my final images on my music magazine the quality of them is significantly better than my preliminary tasks ones. I believe this is because I used a photography studio and was able to adjust lighting to how I needed it, have my model pose how I please and there were no interruptions unlike during the production of my preliminary task. By being able to use Photoshop’s photo editing skills and editing the hue and saturation and colour scheme my images successfully link with one another, this is especially presented on my contents page.  Changing these few things within my images, i.e. using a higher quality camera, a professional setting and software with greater features it made my magazine look a far higher standard than my first preliminary task.

Once again when comparing the two pieces together, I believe it shows my greater understanding of the needed conventions on a magazine and the semantic field of lexis which needs to be used. For example with my preliminary task the lexical field included ‘college’ terms where as my music magazine is simply all music related. By using both of these I have transferred some skills from my preliminary task onto my music magazine.

As well as this similarity I kept many basis conventions the same and used flat plans as a guide for the production of my magazines. Although I kept thoroughly to my preliminary task flat plan, I did not for my music magazine. This was for the best though. With my original flat plan for my music magazine I did not like the idea so decided to totally start again, which I was proud I made the choice of doing. Especially since I changed my contents page two weeks before the deadline, I believe by following my flat plan originally my final product looked extremely unprofessional and messy so this obviously had to change. As you can see through my magazine progression posts, my idea instantly changes and for the better.

Overall, during the creation of my media product I had to take into consideration many factors: the time I had to produce my work; teamwork issues; technology issues (especially the lack of resources and reliability of working computers) and my target audience. I have learnt a lot whilst undergoing this project, from the start of the year; time was a major issue and deadlines approached fast. Being able to keep on top of my work was a struggle, especially when feedback was needed, yet if I was to do this project again I would create my own personal targets and aim to beat those deadlines. By receiving feedback by not only my tutor but colleagues I believed this helped my production a great amount, especially by receiving criticism of my blog/magazine as I was able to change these ‘errors’ in order to submit and hopefully achieve a better grade.

Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your music magazine and why?

I have used prezi to present my answer.

Evaluation Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

I produced a YouTube Video to show my answer. Within the presentation I have highlighted my main features which will attract the audience the most. As well as highlighting the use of pronouns and the impact the semantic field of music has on my magazine.

Evaluation Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your magazine?

http://www.fromtexttospeech.com/texttospeech_output_files/0068976001399024412/1927306.mp3

"I have learnt a lot about technologies from the process of constructing my magazine, I know myself I have excelled in my skills from first ever using Adobe Photoshop.
From the start of my coursework I thoroughly relied on Microsoft Publisher but as I stepped out of my comfort zone I learnt more and more about Photoshop and developed my skills each week. I now feel that I have enough confidence with the software to be able to teach other people how to use it. As well as Publisher and Photoshop my knowledge on Blogger has also greatly improved and with the help of my magazine project I feel a lot more comfortable using different software’s  to present work, for example, my various programmes on my evaluation posts."

Evaluation Question 2

How does your music magazine represent particular social groups?

Here I have used Animoto to present a mini clip of my social group.

How does your music magazine represent particular social groups?

I have used the internet to collect other images which I used as style models for my photos in my magazine.
The song used on this clip is P!NK - So What

Evaluation Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

From the beginning of my progress for my magazine I knew I wanted to use the stereotype of people below who would be my target audience. On my drawing below I have listed the characteristics and hobbies they enjoy.

My target audience will buy my magazine because all my readers will share the same interests which is shown within my actual magazine. These features being on the front cover, contents page and in my double page spread and especially included in my main article. The use of taboo language which especially represents the older target audience and how it isn't suitable for the younger age.

I printed out a copy of my magazine and asked for some feedback from my target audience range of age this was the result:

I especially like how my person who gave me feedback has circled things they liked, this makes me feel as though I have produced a successful magazine.

Front Cover Progression

Once again, I loved my original idea so I kept my front cover like this...

As the weeks went on I added fonts, drop shadows and many other Photoshop skills.

Double Page Spread Progression

I exceptionally liked my original layout so planned on keeping it like this, I wanted it to still look sleek and posh, so kept everything 'in order'.

Contents Page Progression

Originally for my contents page I planned on following my flat plan so produced this.

By the last minute, I decided to change my whole layout and experiment with different things, I concluded with this one lesson.

As the weeks went on, I kept this style and continued to add many features to it.

To conclude, once I had written headings, captions and 'quotes' I was happy with this final layout.

Final Front Cover

This is my final Front Cover of my magazine.

Final Double Page Spread

This is my final double page spread which has my article on.

Final Contents Page

This is my final contents page.

Fonts with Commentary

I like this font Arial as it's easy to understand I will probably use this as my main font for my articles since my magazine has a clean, sleek look. Yet when I use the font I won't capitialise it like this example.

I like this Bell Gothic font as it's once again clear, something which I plan on having my magazine like. Once again, if I use the font I won't have it capitalised.

This font is slightly 'posher' than the other two and looks a little more formal, and since I have analysed Vogue and plan on using the layout for my front cover as inspiration I believe this will be acceptable.

This font would be suitable for my contents page, yet I plan on using a variety of fonts in magazine. I only plan on using the maximum of four fonts on the contents page.

With this font I will use it for my Masthead but bolded so that it stands out more. I believe this gives the 'indie/rock' look whilst still looking sleek and sophisticated something which I want my magazine to look like.

I really don't like this font, therefore will avoid using it within my magazine although it is easy to understand.

I quite like this font but it wouldn't suit my target audeince, and it seems quite 'childish'.

Once again this is similar to Felix Titling so it will match with how I want my masthead.

The Conventions, The Producer and Target Audience

Regarding my main images I plan on using the images of Holly on all three of my pages, my front cover contents page and double page spread since it's my main article. I will have my masthead along the top of my front cover, possibly bolded using the title of Indierocks which is a typical convention so I want to keep it the same. Although I’m rather unsure what font I will use throughout my magazine I think Felix Titling will be a suitable font as it is a clean easy font to read. This will be the font for most of my headings within my magazine. This will appeal to my target audience since within my lexis I will be using taboo language which is an older target audience.

Referring back to my previous research of institutions either PPA of Future PLC would be suitable for my magazine as PPA have produced publications like Vogue and Cosmopolitan which highly relates to the model and style I have followed. Yet the only real music related one was Future PLC who has publications with Guitarist and Total Guitar, and since a lot of guitar music will be involved in my magazine this would be great to be on the market by them. Hopefully the success that Vogue and Beano have had with PPA I would like to use them as my institution.

The target audience of my text is late teens early twenties of both genders with similar characteristics within the music industry. I.e. Indie and rock music. These people will also be avid gig 'goers' and enjoy live music so they can relate to my images and articles within my magazine.

Many media platforms/broadcasters/ outlets will be interested in selling my magazine such as music selling stores, i.e HMV, and radio 1 will show advertising on their website, since they follow this sort of target audience. Since Kerrang and Q will be main competitors I would not be able to advertise with them yet my magazine will be alongside these in supermarkets such as ASDA and Tesco.

Colour Palette

On this post I have produced a colour palette by using Microsoft Publisher, these will be some of the colours I will use within my magazine.

Audience Research and Analysis of Data

I produced an online survey via www.surveymonkey.com this survey consisted of ten questions to ask random people, I hoped to get at least ten responses. I posted the link on my Twitter account so I could have a range of responses. The following slideshow shows my responses via a bar chart and percentages.

As we can see, the response shows that mostly 18-20's took part in my survey, meaning I will consider that target audience for my magazine. Since I received roughly the same percentage on gender my magazine will be both sexes.

As predicted, the cheapest price for a magazine was highest. This will probably be due to the response that mostly students completed my survey. Yet, the next results were shocking. With a huge percentage of people who don't read music magazines. Results show the people mostly listen to Rock/Indie music which will be great for the production of my magazine as that is the genre I plan on using.

The rest of my results are clearly shown, yet if I were to repeat this procedure I would change the questions and choose only specific people to complete the survey especially since I had many sarcastic responses within the survey.

Photograph Choices

By using the photography studio, I plan on taking my own images and using some of these in my magazine.

I plan on using one of these images for my front cover. Which 'Holly' will be my main model/artist for my magazine. I may also use of these for the inside of my magazine, for the contents page.

For my contents page I will use a variety of images some taken in the photography stuido and I will use images from previous gigs/ introducing acts for my stories. By having a range of images it will give an insight of different arctictles within my magazine. Although I haven't fully decided on what images I will use when decided I will edit them in order to make them look more professional. Below are some of the images I will have on my contents page.

Magazine Progression 06/02/2014

This week, I have started to decide on my mains images for my contents page, and edited a few. Below is the original image followed by my edit. I have chosen to edit my image to a black and white scale in order for it to relate better to the flow of my magazine. I edited this through Photoshop.

I plan on using a red and black colour scheme so have been practicing different shades of reds, to see what suits my magazine best. Below are some of the shades I may use.

Photoshoot Planning

Within my photo’s I want my photography to stand out from competitors, in my case I will use sex and rock as a symbol. In my shoots I will brief Holly (the model) on how I plan on having my images.

I will use Holly as a model who will wear all black, except from the fur on her coat to emphasise her body. This will be for my front cover, hopefully this will attract more people to the ‘sex symbol’ Holly -which will hopefully be a huge selling point for my magazine. I will emphasise the colour taking the images in the photography studio with a plain background and in order to contrast with the background Holly will wear jet black, to emphasise the indie/rock look.

Her makeup will also be gothic on the front cover, and for the double page spread images she will wear similar clothing in order to allow the images to match. However, I will keep her makeup gothic/indie so my readers can relate to the model and it will help them focus on her facial expression about ‘music’. I will keep Holly’s clothing dark/gothic and have her with a cigarette for the front cover and for my double page spread have her doing a 'middle finger up' gesture to help relate to article. By following my photo-shoot plan I hope that everything runs successfully and I produce excellent images which will help me make a high-class magazine.

Main Task Flat Plan and Written Rationale

Below are images of my final flat plans, these will help me with the delevopment of my magazine by using them as a guidance to follow. In order to delevop my computing skills, I used both Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher.

Above is my my front cover flat plan which I produced on Photoshop, in order to delevop my skills for when I produce my final magazine. I have tried to keep the layout quite simple yet different in order to catch my reader's attention. I plan on having three coverlines with one main coverline, and as shown above, I will have a main image and the essential information will be besides the name of my magazine. This is so readers will notice this whilst buying it. My main image will be of either a single person/band from a birds-eyed angle forcusing directly on them.

Above is my contents page flat plan which I produced on Microsoft Publisher, like my front cover I will keep the layout simple in order for my readers to navigate easily. Down the left hand side I will have three images relating to the arcticles which will be included in my magazine. One of these images will include a picture I have taken from previous gigs/festivals. Down the right hand side I will have the list of things which will be included in my magazine as well as the obvious, page numbers. My masthead will be located at the top of the page which I have seen in many magazines, I believe this will be a great selling point for my magazine.

Like my previous image I have used Microsoft Publisher again simply for the fact it's quicker which gives me more time to focus on my main magazine. On my double page spread I will have one coverline, this including one large main image on the left hand side and a caption underneath. This is so my magazine can flow a lot easier for the reader. By having an interview and an arcticle my target audience will be able to relate a lot more to my magazine, as they have two things to keep them interested in. The colour scheme of all of the above will follow an indie/rock type scheme and have only three fonts used. In order to keep it looking professional and tidy.
